How you handle it

Aim to owe nothing in April, or pay just enough to avoid penalties.

01 / Check it yourself

It reads the paystub. It shows the math.

The figures read from your paystub, what each one becomes over a full year, and the document beside them.

Fixed tax rules do the math. AI reads and interprets the document.

02 / What you pay, and when

Owe nothing in April.Or pay just enough.

Cover your whole tax, or pay just enough to avoid a penalty. Taxaly works out what that takes.

Your target changes your payments, not your tax.

  1. 01

    Choose your target

Cover your full tax, or pay just enough to avoid a penalty.

  2. 02

    Choose how to pay it

More from each paycheck, quarterly payments, or both.

  3. 03

How much to pay, and when

The amount from each paycheck, and the date and size of any payment.

What total are you targeting?

How much you aim to pay this year, independent of how you pay it.
  • Cover my full taxDEFAULT$52,135Pay your full projected total tax. Zero balance due in April.
  • Safe harbor: 90% of this year$46,921Pay 90% of this year’s projected tax. The bare minimum to avoid the underpayment penalty.
  • Keep my current pace$35,741Stay at today’s withholding plus any already-paid quarters. About $16,394 would be due in April.
  • Safe harbor: 100% of last year$54,670Pay 100% of last year’s tax (110% if your AGI was over $150,000). No penalty even if you owe more in April.
  • Pick my own number$50,000Set a custom dollar amount or % of projected tax.

How are you paying it?

Withholding is per person; estimated payments stay at the household level.
  • Withholding onlyPer paycheckYou cover the full amount through per-paycheck withholding. No quarterly payments.
  • Estimated payments onlyQuarterlyDrop future withholding to $0; cover it with 4 quarterly payments.
  • Withholding + estimatedDEFAULTRecommendedKeep or tune your per-paycheck withholding; the remaining gap is covered by estimated payments.

03 / Before you commit

Try the change.Then decide.

Change one input, or several at the same time, and your tax updates as you go.

You choose the change. Taxaly shows what it would do.

  1. 01

    Change what you are considering

A bonus, a stock sale, more into the 401(k). One input, or several at once.

  2. 02

    See the whole answer move

The full calculation updates, not just the total.

  3. 03

Or save it as a second plan

For a bigger change, save it beside the plan you are on and read the two side by side.

Which move is worth making?
Sample comparison: the current plan beside a stock sale plan that sells $100,000 of stock, all long-term capital gain, on top of the same paystub and inputs, with the difference for each line.

04 / Through the year

Quarterly updates. And any time you need.

Quarterly is the usual rhythm. Anything that changes your income is a reason to look again.

  1. 01

    Start the year

Add a paystub and see where the year is heading.

  2. 02

    Check against last year

Put what you filed beside what you projected and see how close it was.

  3. 03

    Mid-year check

Add a newer paystub and see whether you are still on track.

  4. 04

    Year end

Make changes while there is still time. Most of them have to be done by December 31.

  5. 05

    Any time something happens

A stock sale, a bonus, a charitable donation. Check the tax before you commit, or add the figures afterwards.

If you make estimated payments, the dates are the 15th of April, June, September and January.

Questions

What people ask.

Can I file with these numbers?

No. Taxaly does not create or file tax returns. It projects what you will owe for the year, so you can act while there is still time. You file the way you do now.

Will it replace my accountant?

No. If you use one, Taxaly gives you a running view between visits and a clearer picture to bring to your tax preparer.

Is this tax preparation?

No. Tax preparation looks backward and produces your tax returns. Taxaly looks forward and tells you where you stand during the year.

We both work. Does that change anything?

Often, yes. Each employer withholds as if its paycheck were your only income. Together, your incomes can reach a higher bracket that neither employer is withholding for. Taxaly projects your tax on both incomes together and shows how much more to withhold, and from which paycheck.

Are the paystub numbers right?

The paystub is read, then AI interprets the line items. Those are extended to full year figures by rule, not by AI, and that income is what your tax calculation starts from. Reading is not perfect, so every figure is shown beside the paystub it came from. Change anything that was read incorrectly.

Are the tax calculations right?

Fixed tax rules do the tax math. AI is not used to work out what you owe, so the same inputs always give the same answer. Every step is shown: income, adjustments, deductions and credits, federal and state.

Which documents can I add?

Paystubs. Some read better than others, and you review every field before anything is calculated. School district paystubs are not read yet. If a paystub does not read, you can enter the figures yourself.

Which filing statuses are supported?

Single and married filing jointly. Married filing separately, head of household and qualifying surviving spouse are not supported yet.

What happens to my paystub?

Redact anything you do not want read, before it is read. It is stored encrypted and only US-based services are used to read it. Ask us to delete your account and your information at any time and we will.

What happens when my subscription ends?

It renews automatically at the price in effect then, and you can cancel auto-renewal at any time. A quarterly subscription comes up every three months and an annual one every year. The pricing page has the rest.

What if I want a refund?

Within 30 days, write to support@taxaly.com and it is done. No conditions and no form.
