Privacy Policy

Taxaly, Inc. ("Taxaly," "we," "us") provides tax planning software (the "Software"). This Privacy Policy explains what personal information we collect when you use the Software, how we use and share it, and the choices you have.

1. Information we collect

We collect:

  • Account and contact information: your name, email, and login credentials.
  • Information about your tax and financial situation: income, deductions, and similar details you enter or upload, including information about your dependents.
  • Documents you upload: such as paystubs and tax forms, which may contain sensitive details like Social Security numbers and financial account information. We store these on our servers, hosted with cloud storage provider Amazon Web Services (AWS), encrypted in transit and at rest.
  • Payment information: if you subscribe to a paid plan. Payments are handled by Stripe, our payment processor, and we do not store full card numbers.
  • Usage and device data: how you interact with the Software, plus log and device information such as IP address and browser type.

2. Sensitive information

Some information you provide, such as Social Security numbers and financial account details, is sensitive. We use it only to provide the Software to you and for the purposes described in this Policy. We do not use it to infer characteristics about you, and we do not use it for advertising.

3. How we use information

We use personal information to:

  • Provide, operate, and improve the Software.
  • Read and interpret documents you upload and generate tax planning information and analysis.
  • Respond to your questions and provide support.
  • Process payments and manage your account.
  • Maintain security, prevent misuse, and comply with law.

4. AI services

We use third-party AI service providers to read and interpret the documents you upload and may use them for other features such as answering your questions. Our current AI provider is Google (Gemini). We may also use other providers, such as Anthropic (Claude) or OpenAI (ChatGPT), for parts of the Software. To do this, we send the content you provide to these providers. We use AI providers on service tiers whose terms prohibit them from storing your content or using it to train their models. We use only U.S.-based AI providers. We do not use foreign AI providers, foreign models, or foreign open-source AI services. Our AI providers do not perform tax calculations. Before we send a document to the AI provider, you can use our redaction tool to remove information from it.

5. How we share information

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. We share personal information only:

  • With service providers who work on our behalf, such as our AI providers (see above), hosting and cloud storage (Amazon Web Services), analytics (Mixpanel), payment processing (Stripe), and email and messaging (Customer.io), under contracts that limit their use of the information.
  • To comply with law, respond to legal requests, or protect rights and safety.
  • In connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, subject to this Policy.

6. Analytics and cookies

We use analytics and similar technologies to understand how the Software is used and to improve it. You can control cookies through your browser settings. Where required, we honor recognized opt-out preference signals, such as Global Privacy Control.

7. How long we keep information

We keep personal information for as long as your account is active and as needed to provide the Software, comply with law, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements. During testing or development, we may clear or reset data. When information is no longer needed, we delete or de-identify it.

8. Security

We use reasonable measures to protect personal information, including encryption of personal information in transit and at rest. No system is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

9. Your privacy rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:

  • Know and access the personal information we hold about you.
  • Correct inaccurate information.
  • Delete your information.
  • Limit the use of sensitive information, which we already limit as described above.
  • Opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information, which we do not do.

You may exercise these rights without receiving different or worse treatment. To make a request, contact us at support@taxaly.com. We will verify your request, usually through your account email, and respond within the time the law requires. You may use an authorized agent to make a request. If we deny your request, you may appeal by replying to our response.

California residents: this Policy describes the categories of personal information we collect, use, and disclose, and your rights under California law. We do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined under California law.

10. Children

The Software is for adults, and account holders must be 18 or older. As part of your tax situation, you may provide information about your dependents, including children. We use that information only to provide the Software to you, and we handle it under this Policy. The Software is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly allow anyone under 18 to create an account or use it directly. If we learn that someone under 18 has created an account, we will delete it.

11. Changes to this Policy

We may update this Policy. If we make material changes, we will take reasonable steps to notify you. The effective date shown on this Policy indicates when it was last updated.
